CHILDREN'S DIETS - ALLERGIES AND BEHAVIOUR 11:45am- 12:15pm
Getting the right nutrients early in life is important for newborn babies. Nutritional formulas try to mimic breast milk as this is the ideal food for the newborn. Brain development occurs rapidly in the first six months and during this time babies have special nutritional needs. Nutrients from breast milk or fortified infant formula are the essential for this first year of life.
Food allergies affect up to 8% of babies under 12 months and about 3% of children under five, decreasing with age. Commonly these are milk, egg, wheat and nuts.
Food intolerance is much more common, affecting around 10% babies (through breastmilk), and older children. Food involved may be milk, orange juice, tomatoes and some grains.
Poor concentration and poor behaviour in the school age children are common.
This presentation considers the foods that are ideal in the first year of life and how to manage food allergies or intolerances in young children in early schooling.

The Importance of Swimming and Babies 1:15pm - 1:45pm
We spend the first 40 weeks of our lives in a liquid environment so we are born with one of the skills necessary to survive in water, balance. It is our exposure to a water environment after we are born that dictates how we react to that environment.
The are some very basic skills new parents can use at bath and shower time to help their children retain the skill and teach their baby/child the other skill necessary to survive in water, breath control.
For six decades my family has been teaching children and adults these skills and I am excited about being able to share them with you.
Chris Shapland
Chris is the CEO of Shapland Swim Schools Pty. Ltd. There are 11 Shapland swim schools in South East Queensland teaching children their Personal Aquatic Survival Skills

Chris still swims regularly and feels his organization is also in the business of saving children’s lives in that being able to swim is a life long life saving skill.
